Evaluation
Throughout the production of my Music Magazine I researched many real magazines such as NME, Rolling Stone, and Rock Sound. I followed several conventions of these magazines to help me get a professional look to my magazine. The conventions I have used such as the mastheads, photos, sub-headlines, barcode, price and date issue have helped me to make my magazine as realistic as possible. I decided to follow some conventions from several music magazines however, I have put my own twist onto it making it looks unusual and unique as I believe it makes it more attractive and avoids it being boring. For my front cover I followed a convention from Rock Sound magazine by writing some singers names down the left hand side I decided to do this because it fills up space and looks effective. I used an unusual font to write the singers names out like Rock Sound has because it's unique. I also wrote the sub-headline above the singers names in yellow like the Rock Sound magazine because it's very colourful and eye catching. The photo I used on the front cover is of one female who is representing a singer, this is seen very often in real music magazines. Also when I have been researching magazines I have found out that a lot of them makes the main photo overlap the title so I decided to do the same making it looks realistic and effective. My double page spread is very basic and follows nearly all the conventions of real magazines as it contains a large photo which stretches over a full page and then onto the next and I have then wrote a story about the photo which most magazines do. For my contents page I decided to follow the conventions of Rolling Stones contents page as I think it looks well set out and effective. I have only put a few pages on the contents page which are the main features and then I have divided them from one another with a red line which is also used on the Rolling Stone contents page, I believe this creates a huge impact and makes it look realist.
How does your Media product represent particular social groups?
The social group I aimed to represent was young males and females who are interested in the musical industry and also those who have a musical talent and are searching for fame and stardom. I have represented the social groups through the photos for example using photos of a young audience which the readers can relate to and also using an acoustic guitar showing the musical genre of the magazine. The models I have used for my photos are dressed casual as I believe this represents the idea I am trying to create in my magazine that all 'normal' people can taste fame.
What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I believe IPC might distribute my magazine as they distribute NME and my magazine is slightly the same as NME because the genre of music is the same. Also the age range of NME's audience is the same as my magazine so it will have a big impact for the audience like NME does.
Who would be the audience for your Media product?
The audience for my magazine is young males and females who have a born interest in the music industry. The main audience I wanted to attract was normal males and female artists who're searching for fame. The artist who have a natural talent for music and need to be recognised by record labels.
How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted and addressed my audience by the use of unusual and unique fonts as it creates a modern effect on the magazine with the audience being able to relate to modern day media. I also attracted them through my photos as I have used normal teenage models which the audience can relate to because they're just like themselves. I used models who're of the same age group as my audience so that they can relate to them and it makes the magazine more believable to them. I also used an acoustic guitar and this shows the musical genre of the magazines to the audience and shows that anyone can pick up a guitar and with dedicated practice can achieve success.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In the process of constructing my magazine I have learnt a lot of techniques on how to make my magazine looks more professional and realistic. For example I have learnt how to edit photos so i can put them onto an effective background which gives impact for the audience. I have also learnt how to construct a double page spread and make it look like real music magazines like NME. I have learnt how to use Photoshop to make my photos look more professional and advanced from just an original photo.
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
My progression from my preliminary task has advanced a lot. I believe I can now produce a magazine with the conventions of a real music magazine. I can also now edit photos to make them look professional using Photoshop which I couldn't do before. By researching magazines I have learnt where to place parts such as the masthead, barcode and sub-headlines and with this technique I can now produce a professional layout which follows the full conventions of a real music magazine. So now I am advanced with use Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher I can now create a magazine easily whereas when I was doing my Preliminary task I couldn't. With all this I have learnt I can now produce a well presented magazine.
Finished Contents Page for my Music Magazine
For my contents page I decided to use a blue background which I also did on my other two pages because this shows consistency throughout the magazine and shows it has been well published. For the title I decided to use a red font on a black background which is very modern and eye catching for the readers. It gives a instant impact for my audience. I also decided to use the title 'Unsigned' again because it fills some space and also because I have seen it in a magazine which i researched and I liked the way it has been presented.
I thought i would use a photo on the left hand side which I edited to how I wanted it look, I used this photo of a girl playing the guitar because again it implies that the magazine is specifically musical and aims to show the talent of unsigned artists. To fill more space I added some text at the bottom right near the photo, I used white text which stands out very well and is easy to read.
On the right hand side I decided to use only main features within the magazine and limit the amount of pages I would show. Firstly I have put a little insight into the 'cover story' for my magazine. I put a little sub-headline 'cover story' in a red font which I haven't done for the other stories this because the front cover story is the main story within the magazine and the most important so I wanted it to stand out and looks different to the rest of the brief story introductions. After each insight to the story I have divided it with a little red line because when I was researching Rolling Stone magazine they have done the same and I really liked the way it looked. For the introductions to the stories I have used white text which stands out and i have put the page numbers on where the stories can be found, I have put these in a bold text making them stand out more.
I believe the font colours I have used and the background colour are very bright colours and effective for the readers. I decided to use a normal font and keep it nearly all the same throughout the contents page because I believe this page is what the readers are less likely to read the most so I kept it basic and well set out. I think the use of the divided text makes it all looks professionally set out and easy to find the text for the readers.
Finished Double Page Spread for my Music Magazine
Finished Front Cover for my Music Magazine
This is the end product for my Front Cover and overall I am very happy with how it looks. Through the production of this Front Cover I researched many magazine to help me figure out what I needed to make it appeal to my audience.
The title I went for was 'Unsigned' because I believe most of the amazing music these days is not heard of and a lot of unsigned bands or singers aren't getting the breakthrough they deserve. For the title I went for a white title on black background to make it stand out and also to catch the audiences eye. The font I used for the title was Chiller, I decided to use this font because I believe it looks very modern and also it looks like a kind of font which suit the audience of magazine. The magazines I researched didn't really have the same effect I used for my title and I like this because it is unique and makes it different to other magazines. I used a few different fonts on my front cover because I didn't want to use the same old boring font which wouldn't be effective at all for the readers. On the left hand side under 'Unsigned Presents' I have used several singers names and used an unusual font I did this because it looks very modern and a lot of magazines these days are using different and unique fonts to add effect to their magazines so I thought I would use this technique for mine. I decided to put the issue date and issue number on the right hand side of the title because it fills up a bit of space instead of leaving it blank. I also changed the positioning of the bar code from my original draft from the right hand side to the left because I had more space there and I also put the price above this in a white coloured font which stands out on the blue background.
The photograph I used is of a young girl. She represents the age group of my magazine as a young age group. For the front cover picture i didn't want to represent her as fully musical with an instrument because I want to represent music as a talent and show that anybody like this girl can be unique with or without a talent. When I researched NME magazine I saw that the photo's they use on their front cover always overlap the title so I wanted to use this effect as I think it has a big impact, so I used this technique with my front cover.
The colours I used for my text were white and yellow with background of black and blue. I decided to use these because I think it makes the whole front cover stand out and catches the eye of the readers instantly. I also think the colours give the front cover a modern edge. I believe my magazine is very eye catching and modern which suits the age range I wanted it to.
Possible names for my Music Magazine
Talent - When I thought of the word music, talent always comes to mind. I think this is a good names for a music magazine because all singers have talent and it's a unique talent to have. The name talent is quite modern and suits the age range of my magazine. It can also be seen as upcoming talent and that is what I am aiming to achieve. All the audience for my magazine will know the word talent and what is truly means so this is a good candidate for my magazine title.
Chord - This is an appropriate title for my music magazine as it is a word which is associated to a music instrument. When my audience see this title they will instantly know it's a music magazine as it's a very well known musical word. However, this title has downfalls as it is very plain and boring. This is the title I least like.
Acoustic - The title 'Acoustic' is very suitable for my magazine because I am aiming for a magazine that specifically aims around acoustic music with just a voice and a guitar as this is my favourite genre of music. This is quite a good candidate for my magazine and may be used for my title.
Unsigned - The title 'Unsigned' is my favourite title. This is because throughout my full magazine production my first thought was that I wanted to produce a magazine that specified on upcoming music what my audience wouldn't have heard of before. So the word unsigned gives the meaning of bands/singers who have yet to be signed to a record company but have a very unique talent. Also when the word unsigned is used my audience will know that it means music because it is modern for my age range. The word unsigned might also make my audience think of the TV programme which searches for new musical talent. This is my favourite title for my magazine and I have chosen to use this one.

Analysis of Double Page Spread (Rolling Stone)
Analysis of Contents Page (Rolling Stone)
This is the contents page of Rolling Stone magazine. It is quite an unusual contents page with a big photo being used which nearly fills the full page and then the text on the right hand side.
The photo used is of Kanye West and it is a photo taken from a gig he has done. So this represent him in the music industry as an recording artist, with Rolling Stone magazine covering his return to music. The text used on this photo has 'Kanye's Big Return' in a bigger font size as the rest of the text which shows what the photo is being used for, under the sub-headline is a breif insight into what the story of the photo is about. The use of this photo of Kanye at a gig is different to the other magazines I have analyised as none of them used live photo's so the used of this shows the story behing the photo is true which reassured the readers. The photo is the main focus on the page as even the photo overlays the main title on the page showing that they care more about the presentation over the text as it has more of an attractive impact.
The text used on the right hand side is of specific pages within the magazine and what is on those pages. At the top of these short paragraphs is the 'Cover Story' which tells you why Brad Pitt is used and why he has given an interview to Rolling Stone. The text gives you a little insight into why he has given an interview. The rest of the text also gives insights into the pages, with some of the pages being best 100 singles, the 50 best albums and all the main titles of these are in a bold black font making them stand out and then the reader can read the rest of the text. All of the text stands out well the on the background it is put on for instance the black text on the white background stands out making it easy to read.
Analysis of Front Cover (Rolling Stone)
This is the front cover of Rolling Stone magazine, the magazine is based in New York City and has been published every two weeks since 1967. The magazine specifised around pop music however, it also has actor/actress interviews within the magzine.
On this front cover the layout is the photo is mainly on the right hand side of the cover with the text on the left. The photo is of Brad Pitt who has nothing to do with the music industry and his photo overlaps the title of the magazine but this won't affect the readers as it is a popular magazine and they will recognise it instantly without even seeing the title. The photo is a professional shot of Brad which is represented through the magazine showing he has given an interview to them. On the photo he is looking serious and he looks quite aged this could be used to represent the age of the magazine as it has been publisher for over 30 years now. Also Brad Pitt was born before the first issue of the magazine so he could be used because he was around when the first issue was publisher making him in the era of the music genre.
The title of the magazine is in bright blue text which stands out instantly for the regular buyers of the magazine so they always know the logo without even having to see the full thing, this is why the photo is allowed to overlap it. The text of 'Brad Pitt' is the only part of the text in white this is probably because the magazine is specifically trying to make the interview with Brad stand out as he is a very popular actor. The rest of the text is black and differs in font sizes, this text stands out very well on the magazine making it attractive for the reader. The use of different font sizes and font colours is that it makes it less boring and increases it's attractivness.
The language used on this front page of the magazine is how the layout is structured with several sections of text and how it's all been parted from one another, the picture of Brad Putt and how he represents the use of actor interviews within the magazine. Also the headlines and sub-headlines.
The institution of the magazine is Jann Wenner who publishes the magazine within her company Wenner Media LLC.
The ideology for the magazine is that it's all about music so the idea's behind the text what is in the magazine will have come from the latest happenings in the music industry.
The audience for this magazine is for the young age groups, possibly late teens and over. Also people who are specifically interested in the pop genre and like the often actor interview.
The representation shown in the picture of Brad Pitt is how the photo of him is taken with him looking serious as an actor showing he is focused on his interview what he gave to the magazine.

Analysis of Double Page Spread (Rock Sound)
This is the double page spread in the magazine (Rock Sound). The layout of these pages are very unusual. In many magazines it is just a big photo on one side and text on the other whereas this double page spread is totally different. It has a main photo of a singer and his dog which stretches over both pages, also it has several other photo's. The use of this makes it very unique and effective for the readers. The photo's are represented as very smug and unusual. The story is about a singer taking a new appraoch to recording a new album and it says in a quote 'have you ever seen the world through a dogs eyes?' this shows why the dogs on the page have been used. It is all very unusual and unique which is constisten for this issue as the other pages are the same.
Analysis of Rock Sound Contents Page
This is the contents page of Rock Sound magazine. This contents page is quite unusual as it shows a big photo at the bottom and only shows the main features in the magazine. The unusual layout of the contents page has a big impact on the magazine as it makes it unique and attractive for the readers. It is also consistent on how it is all different to the usual boring magazine.
The photo used at the bottom is of the 'Gallows' which follows on from the front cover. The photo is a professional shot and includes all member of the band whereas the front cover only featured the lead singer. The photo is black and white which represents the rock genre. The photo is represented as a serious image as the band all have serious faces so they're trying to come across as serious to their music. The quote at the top left hand side is about the band which is pretty much making the full contents page about them which is also the same on the front cover so the magazine is trying to market the band as an upcoming band to the rock genre.
Only three colours are used on this contents page which are black, white, and blue however it is mainly black and white. This doesn't really make the page very attractive but it does appeal to the magazines audience because it does look like a rock magazine because the colours are dark. The use of the blue for the page number could be to make it a bit more attractive and to add a bit more colour to the overall page. The use of only the main features being use is that is allows space for the photo at the bottom and the text for the quote making it unique and attractive as other magazines don't usually use this technique. The title of the magazine is used again at the bottom right hand corner and is in bold white font again like the front cover title showing consistency and it also stands out on top of the photo. There is an effect in the background of the page with blue text being put behind the white text in the quote with is being all scraggly, this gives a huge effect making it unusual and attractive for the reader.

Analysis of Double Page Spread (NME)
This is the double page spread of the NME magazine, in this weeks issue NME has decided to lay it out by putting the photo on the left and the text on the right. The photo gives over one page onto the other which suggests it is trying to give out the main point to the story behind the text. The photo is a professional shot of 'Florence and the Machine' it has been stretched over an A4 page onto the next with the text covering up the rest of the blank page. The photo is quite dull coloured with black and white being used however, it is also quite bright with red and others bright colours being used. This could have been used to give a good contrast of colours which makes it more attractive to the reader. I think the use of this photo is quite unusual because it's not just a basic photo where the singer or band is standing in one place facing the camera, this photo is quite out going in the sense of she is holding up something which could represent the story of her birthday which is mentioned in the text.
The text on the right hand side is set out in columned paragraphs which makes it less bundled up and easy to read. The text in bold stands out from the other text and this could because it is about why the photo has been taken in that way. The 'New Noise' logo at the top right hand corner has been used which is also seen on the contents page suggestion this singer is new to the music industry. The name of the band/singer 'Florence and the Machine' has been added on top of the photo in big bold letters which stands out instantly for people who may not know of the singer and are interested in new music.
The way the photo is presented to the readers suggests that the girl is not really an experienced music artist because her photo isn't very strong as she is messing about holding something up. The way she is dressed is quite 'indie' which represents the genre of the magazine. The way the new singer gets a double page spread suggests she is upcoming and has a lot of potential to be mentioned in the magazine which will help promote her as a singer.
Analysis of Contents Page (NME)
Analysis of Front Cover (NME)
On this front cover they have gone for a bright and colourful issue which instantly draws to the public eye. The main photograph on this issue is of 'Florence and the Machine' which is positioned on the right hand side giving room for other photo's. The main photograph looks like a professional shot which is a great shot suggesting her money and fame as a musician. Alongside this main photograph is several others of musicians which shows a select few bands which are in the magazine to read up on. All the photo's used are professional shots which gives a good professional image for the full magazine making it authentic for the readers. From photo to photo the sub-headlines of the band names changes colour from black/yellow to red/white which are bright colour and very attractive and consistent. The colours used are white, red, yellow, and black and all these colours are strong and give a big impact to the readers eye.
The title of the magazine is bright red on a white background making it stand out for the readers so they know it's NME magazine. All of the text used is in block capitals making it all eye catching and attractive. The text is all mainly band names or music genres which gives the reader an insight into whats in this weeks issue.
The language used on this front page of the magazine is how the layout is structured with several sections of text and how it's all been parted from one another, the picture of all the bands in boxed sections and the main photograph which is bigger than the others. Along with all the headlines and sub-headlines.
The institution of the magazine is IPC Media who publish the magazine and also NME who produce all the information from the music industry and put it into their magazine.
The ideology for the magazine is that it's all about music so the idea's behind the text what is in the magazine will have come from the latest happenings in the music industry.
The audience for this magazine could be seen for an age of 16-19 however, it's mainly for anyone who is interested in the specific music genres which this magazine specifies on.
The representation shown in the pictures are that they're all part of bands or in the music industry with all of them being taken as professional photographs.

Evaluation Of College Magazine
In what ways does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine follows the conventions because it contains features such as the photograph which is edited, the masthead, the headline and sub-headlines , the bad code, and the price.
How does your Media product represent particular social groups?
My magazines particular social group is college students, this is represented through the photograph I took which shows two college students. I wanted to portray the students as happy and comfortable at college and I believe I achieved this as my photo’s show happiness and the will to succeed. The photo I used for my front cover is of two students with big smiles which represents the happiness at being at Wyke College and the other photo I took is of five students all doing work which shows there is also a good side to work where friends can meet and socialise. What kind of
What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The institution for my magazine would be Wyke College, as the magazine is aimed for students, parents, and staff who are attached to the college in some way.
Who would be the audience for your Media product?
The audience for my magazine would be the students, parents, and staff who will all have parts in the magazine which are aimed at them. How did you attract/address your audience?
The techniques I used to attract and address my audience was techniques such as how my photograph was taken and what colours were used too back up the photo. I went with a very positive photo and the colours I used were very bright which attracts the audience and gives them a positive feeling. Also the text I used wasn’t too in-depth which allows the readers not to get a lot of the story so this means they have to buy it to read more.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the making of my magazine I think I have picked up some valuable aspects to help me make further magazines In media studies as I have learnt how to take a high quality photograph and then use Photoshop to edit it and improve it to make it look more professional.
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
During the progression of my magazine I feel I have learnt valuable technical skills such as using Photoshop to make my photo’s more professional which will help throughout media. Also I believe I have picked up skills in how to structure a magazine which I didn’t know before. My photography skills have also advanced as now I feel positive when taking a photo and believe it looks more professional.
