LIIAR For My Music Magazine

For my Foundation Portfolio – Main task I have to create a new music magazine which consists of: the front page; contents page; and a double paged spread. Through the acronym LIIAR I will be able to look how the media key concepts will apply for the magazine I choose to base my own magazine around.

Language

The language for my magazine will be all the text, pictures and the colours used to support these. For example the text I will use will be straight to the point and will catch the readers eye making them want to read on. The pictures will consist of one big main picture will be the main focus of the front cover, and several other pictures which will be set around the main photo to add more stories. The colours I use will be very attractive and effective on the eye, which will make my magazine avoid becoming boring.

Institution

They’re a few companies behind the publishing of music magazines. For example IPC Media are the publishers of NME (New Musical Express) and they’re one of the United Kingdom’s leading consumer magazine and digital publisher, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year when publishing the magazine they have different people who work on different parts of the magazine such as editor: Connor McNicholas, Publishing director: Paul Cheal, Publisher: Nicola Woods, and Head of marketing: Tim Pearson. Almost two in every three women and over 45% of U.K men read an IPC magazine, this is almost 27 million U.K adults.

Ipc Media - is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher and offers a wide range of different magazines that are suited to almost every reader. These include the very popular music magazine, NME. The NME is a British weekly music magazine featuring latest music news, UK's most comprehensive gig guide, reviews, gigs,tracks and albums and comments from nations most opinionated writes and gives an essential guide to music.

Emap - is the publisher of the kerrang magazine, the UK's premier multi-platform music destination and is the worlds biggest selling weekly rock magazine. The six music magazines in the Emap Performance stable - Sneak, Smash Hits, Kerrang!, Mixmag, Q, Mojo - cover a wide spectrum of tastes and age groups but all stand by a reputation of quality and passion. emap Performance also has a variety of websites supporting the music magazines and radio stations.

Future - This publisher is a trusted editorial service and magazines are just one of the media types they publish, to inform, entertain. Future produces over 4 million magazines each month. In addition, Future exports its publications to 90 countries internationally, making them the UK's number one exporter and licensor of monthly magazines. These include, Classic Rock, the UK’s fastest growing rock music magazine and this publisher is the global market leader in guitar magazines.

Audience

Many music magazines in the music industry have different musical genres for example: indie; rock; metal; and r’n’b. However, my music magazine will be specifically aimed at indie music. A magazine which I will help base mine around will be NME (New Musical Express) their Statistics look like this: 65% Male*, 50% 16-24*, 23% 25-34*and 79% ABC1*. My magazine will be aimed at all those who are interested in music of any era but people whose musical interests are more to the indie side of music.

Representation

The representation of my magazine is going to be of a fairly young audience around 16-24 who are interested in up coming music in the indie genre. The photo’s I use will show people playing the guitar who look comfortable playing showing they enjoy what they do to give a positive message across to the audience.

Evaluation Of College Magazine

In what ways does your Media product use,develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My magazine follows the conventions because it contains features such as the photograph which is edited, the masthead, the headline and sub-headlines , the bad code, and the price.

How does your Media product represent particular social groups?
My magazines particular social group is college students, this is represented through the photograph I took which shows two college students. I wanted to portray the students as happy and comfortable at college and I believe I achieved this as my photo’s show happiness and the will to succeed. The photo I used for my front cover is of two students with big smiles which represents the happiness at being at Wyke College and the other photo I took is of five students all doing work which shows there is also a good side to work where friends can meet and socialise. What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The institution for my magazine would be Wyke College, as the magazine is aimed for students, parents, and staff who are attached to the college in some way.


Who would be the audience for your Media product?
The audience for my magazine would be the students, parents, and staff who will all have parts in the magazine which are aimed at them.How did you attract/address your audience?
The techniques I used to attract and address my audience was techniques such as how my photograph was taken and what colours were used too back up the photo. I went with a very positive photo and the colours I used were very bright which attracts the audience and gives them a positive feeling. Also the text I used wasn’t too in-depth which allows the readers not to get a lot of the story so this means they have to buy it to read more.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the making of my magazine I think I have picked up some valuable aspects to help me make further magazines In media studies as I have learnt how to take a high quality photograph and then use Photoshop to edit it and improve it to make it look more professional.

Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
During the progression of my magazine I feel I have learnt valuable technical skills such as using Photoshop to make my photo’s more professional which will help throughout media. Also I believe I have picked up skills in how to structure a magazine which I didn’t know before. My photography skills have also advanced as now I feel positive when taking a photo and believe it looks more professional.

Draft of Contents Page for College Magazine

This is a draft of my contents page will be used to design my finished design of a contents page. The aim of this page will be to give the readers an insight into what is on all the pages within the magazine and also the use of pictures will show them what is done within the college.

The structure of this will be the page list on the left hand side which will show the readers what is on each page and then three pictures will be on the other side which shows students at college.

I am going to use a few colours for the contents page will be make it more effective and stop it from becoming boring for the readers. I will use bright colours again making it eye catching. The text for the heading "contents page" will be big as it's the main text. For the text i am thinking of using a font style which is different so it stands out and makes it more interesting.

This is just a Draft of what my Finished College magazine will look like. My magazine will be aimed at 16-19 year old college students however, college staff and students parents will also benefit from this magazine. The whole purpose of the magazine will be to give advice and information to students about college life which will be seen as a guideline for them to succeed. Also staff can see latest updates within the college with the parents being able to see the whole success of the college and how it is appropriate for their children.

The structure of my magazine will be just one photograph with it's own main story but then a few other sub-stories to make the magazine more interesting and eye catching. The photograph will be of two students together expressing their joy at being a student at Wyke College. The use of this overpowering photo will be very eye catching and suits the purpose of the magazine very well. The main heading "Unique" will be set behind the photo which will stand out and also around the photo will be the headings and sub-headings.

The name i thought of for my magazine is "Unique" as everybody is unique and this is represented within the college. This name gives out a very positive attitude which the students and staff will know is very true.

The headings and sub-headings i will be using will be little information but will be an opener to the full story which will be contained in the magazine which can be seen when purchased. The heading will be the bigger of the texts as it is the main story in the issue whereas the sub-headings will be smaller but still effective for the reader. I will have a bar code in the bottom right hand corner which will state the price of the magazine which will be easy to see. The date and issue number of the magazine will be positioned at the top of the magazine which will just state the date of when it's out and the number of issue it is.

Textual Analysis of Empire Magazine

This magazine is a film magazine which is published in Britain, it has been getting published monthly since July 1989. It gives the readers news on upcoming films, with other information such as previews and reviews on movies.


On the front cover it is focusing on the new Batman film 'The Dark Knight' with an introduction into the Joker. The colours used are dark colours, and also attractive colours, the dark colours could be used to emphasise the darkness behind Batman whilst the attractiveness of the colours are used to draw the reader in. The picture of 'The Joker' looks like a promotional shot for the movie which is also used in the movie it is a central shot which allows text to be wrote over it. The masthead 'EMPIRE' which is the title of the magazine is in red bold text which draws the reader in, the picture of Joker stretches over the text and even covers up the full 'P' which suggests that people have come to know the magazine and instantly know what magazine it is when a new issue surfaces.

The only colours used are white,red,purple,and green which most are used to actually represent Batman movies usually, this will be well known by fans of Batman movies or comics. The colours all work well with each other, such as with the dark colours and the light text it is easy to read and stands out to the readers. The text 'Meet the Joker' is in different and unusual font which is used all the time for Batman, this makes the magazine look more unique. The cover gives an insight into the actual story of the Joker, as it says there is a 'one on one with the new Batman nemesis' this allows the reader to actually see why the magazine has focused on the Joker. The words 'He's cold blooded, mess murdering clown' gives a brief insight into the Jokers character, which could be interesting and helpful towards readers who haven't seen Batman before. The whole cover mainly focuses on The Joker however, it says 'Plus' then several other films which gives a quick insight into what other film information is inside the magazine which will make people buy it if they are interested in any new upcoming movies.

The Language of this magazine is how the have structured everything out, to fit the story and how they wanted everything to be presented. Also it's the use of the picture of The Joker and the text to back the picture up.
The institution of this magazine is Bauer who publish the magazine and gather all the information which is Incorporated into the magazine.
The Ideology of this is the story of The Joker and other information about upcoming movies, so this will be backed up from new films coming out with reviews and previews about them.
The audience for this magazine will be kids ages between 16-19 however, it will be mainly aimed at anyone who has a interest in watching movie.
The representation showed in the picture is that it's a professional shot which is a shot from the movie with Joker looking like he's sat in a prison cell.
